CLEOBIS and BIROS, the sons of Cydippe, a priestess of Hera (Juno) at Argos. When oxen could not be procured for their mother's chariot, they put themselves under the yoke, and drew it 45 stadia to the temple, amidst the acclamations of the multitude. Cydippe entreated the goddess to reward their affection with the gift that was best for mortals. The goddess heard her prayer; and during the night they both died as they slept in the temple. The Argives raised statues to their memory at Delphi. (Herodot. i. 31.)
