a market-town in the county of Salop, on the Rea, 26 miles S.E. of Shrewsbury, and 137 from London. Pop. (1851) 1738. It is so called from the Mortimer family, to whom it once belonged, and who had a castle here which was destroyed in the time of Henry II. The church is a fine old building in the early English style. The Clee hills in the vicinity are rich in coal, iron, and limestone. Market-day Wednesday.
