the first of the nine muses, presided over history. She appears crowned with laurels, holding in one hand a trumpet, and in the other a book. Sometimes she holds a plectrum or quill with a lute. Her name is derived from κλέος, gloria; and it was her office to record the actions of illustrious heroes. Clio bore a son, Hyacinthus, to Pierus. See Muses.
