Volume 7 · 87 words · 1860 Edition

a Macedonian, the familiar friend of Alexander the Great, was brother to Hellanice, the foster-mother of that prince. He followed Alexander in his conquests, and saved his life when he was about to be cut down by Spitridates at the passage of the Granicus. He commanded the right wing at Arbela, and was on the eve of departing to Bactria as governor of the province, when Alexander invited him to a banquet. During the repast Clitus, heated with wine, ventured to depreciate the exploits of that prince.
