market-town, formerly an episcopal city of Ireland, 15 miles E. by S. of Cork. A church was built and a bishopric erected here by St Colman, who died in 604; and an abbey was founded in 707. In 1430 the bishopric was united to that of Cork. In 1678 it was again governed by its own prelates, one of whom was the celebrated Berkeley; but in 1835 the episcopate was again merged in that of Cork. The cathedral is a large old cruciform building, with some good monuments; and near it stands an ancient round tower 92 feet in height. The old episcopal palace is now a private residence. Pop. (1851) 1713.
