the capital of the duchy or province of the same name, forming part of the duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, is pleasantly situated on the left bank of the Itz, an affluent of the Regen, 40 miles S.S.E. of Gotha. The ducal palace of Ehrenburg, a fine Gothic edifice erected in 1549, is a favourite summer-residence of the reigning duke, and has several apartments very tastefully fitted up, a library of 26,000 volumes, and a collection of specimens in natural history, minerals, coins, and paintings. Coburg has a theatre, arsenal, five churches, a gymnasmum founded in 1604, a normal school, observatory, two public libraries, and a cabinet of natural history. The ancient castle of the dukes of Coburg is situated on a commanding eminence in the vicinity. It was for some time the residence of Luther; and the bedstead on which he slept, and the pulpit from which he preached in the old chapel, are still shown. Coburg has manufactures of linen, woollen, and cotton goods, gold and silver articles, and dye-works; and carries on an active trade. In the vicinity are the castles of Callenberg and Lauterberg. Pop. (1846) 10,092.
