GREAT, a market-town of England, county of Essex, 44 miles from London, picturesquely situated, partly at the base and partly on the acclivity of a hill on the N. side of the Blackwater river, here crossed by an ancient bridge of three arches. It was formerly celebrated for the manufacture of a white baize, known as "Coggleshell whites." The principal manufacture is now that of silk. The parish church is a spacious building in the perpendicular style, with a square tower. It has some remains of a Cistercian abbey, founded in 1142 by king Stephen. Pop. (1851) 3484.
