COLDSTREAM

Volume 7 · 108 words · 1860 Edition

a border town of Scotland, in Berwickshire, 15 miles W. of Berwick, on the north bank of the Tweed, here crossed by a bridge of five arches. It is irregularly built, but being situated on the principal thoroughfare between England and Scotland, it has a considerable trade. Near the town is the ford of the Tweed, by which the Scotch and English armies crossed in former times. The "Coldstream Guards" are so named from having been raised here by General Monk in 1659-60. Coldstream, like Gretna Green, is celebrated for its irregular marriages. In the vicinity is Lennel House, a seat of the Earl of Haddington. Pop.(1851) 2238.
