a strongly fortified town of Italy, States of the Church, legation of Ferrara, and 27 miles S.E. of that city. The town is unhealthy, being surrounded by salt marshes termed Valli-di-Comacchio. Pop. 5500, principally engaged in the eel fisheries and salt works. By the treaty of Vienna, this town is garrisoned by the Austrians.
