a well-known instrument for arranging the hair. Combs were formerly made by saws that cut out the interstices of the teeth; but they are now made by a sort of chisel with several edges that cut two combs at once out of the same piece of horn, tortoiseshell, or ivory,—the teeth of one coming out of the portion interposed between the teeth of the other. This process is called the parting of combs, and is exceedingly ingenious. See Trans. Soc. Arts; Engineer's and Mechanist's Encyclop.
