Volume 7 · 103 words · 1860 Edition

Cape, the southern extremity of the continent of India, situated in the native state of Travancore. According to Captain Horsburgh, it is formed of a circular low sandy point, not discernible above the distance of about four leagues from sea. The land is bold, and may be approached within about a mile and a half or two miles; beyond which it is dangerous for ships to proceed in consequence of the rocky character of the coast. An elevated summit, some distance north of the cape, has by navigators sailing at a distance been sometimes mistaken for the cape itself. Long. 77.35. Lat. 8.5.
