St James of, or St James of the Sword, an ancient order of knighthood in Spain, founded either towards the close of the twelfth or in the beginning of the thirteenth century. It is the chief of the four military orders, namely, Compostella, Calatrava, Alcantara, and Manresa. This order received its rules of government from Pope Alexander III. See Santiago.

inland town of Mexico, state of Jalisco, 100 miles W. of Guadalaxara. Tobacco was formerly cultivated in the adjacent country, but was soon found to be quite unprofitable. The soil is barren, but there are several silver mines in the neighbourhood.
