(Fr. couduire, to guide), a name given to a person who stands on a cliff or on any elevated position during the time of fishing, for the purpose of directing the fishermen by signs in which direction the shoals are passing; the peculiar appearance which is occasioned in the water by the motion of the fish being more readily observed from an eminence than from the level of the water. Conders are otherwise called bailiffs.
