(Lat. con, and juro, to swear), the act of using certain magical words, characters, or ceremonies, to expel evil spirits, allay storms, or perform supernatural or extraordinary acts. The priests of the Roman Catholic Church pretend to expel devils by the sprinkling of holy water over the possessed, accompanied with a number of conjurations and exorcisms.
