in the Etrusco-Roman language of religion, the twelve superior deities who formed the common council of the gods assembled by Jupiter. Their names are comprehended in the two following verses of Ennius, as quoted by Apuleius, De Deo Socratis:
Juno, Vesta, Minerva, Ceres, Diana, Venus, Mars, Mercurus, Jovis, Neptunus, Vulcanus, Apollo.
The word is derived from consentio, to agree, to unite upon something accordingly. These deities were also styled Dii Magni, and Celestes, or Nobiles, as distinguished from the inferior gods.
