Architecture, a projecting bracket, usually in the form of the letter S. Consoles are often placed as ornaments on the side of door-cases. In Vitruvius, the terms ancus (δύσκα) and prothyris (προθύρις) appear to be other names for the same thing. See Architecture, vol. iii., p. 508.
