Richard (1582-1635), an English poet and divine, born at Ewell, Surrey, and educated at Oxford, where he was esteemed one of the most celebrated wits of the university. Having officiated for some time as chaplain to James I., in 1629 he was appointed bishop of Oxford, and in 1632 translated to the see of Norwich. His poems, which were written long previous to his elevation to the episcopal bench, and not intended for publication, were published after his death, under the title of Poetica Stroma. He left behind him a character for hospitality, and was a generous encourager of public designs.
