in Hindustan, a village within the limits of the presidency of Bombay, situate 16 miles N.E. of the city of Poona. The village, insignificant in itself, has been rendered memorable from its gallant defence, on the 1st January 1818, by a British force under the command of Captain Staunton, against a formidable detachment of the troops of the Peishwa. The British force consisted of only 500 native infantry, 26 European artillerymen, and a small number of auxiliary horse; that of the Peishwa was composed of three divisions of infantry, amounting in the aggregate to 3000 men, while in the valley below the village, the main army of the Mahrattas lay encamped, consisting of 20,000 horse and 8000 foot. The Peishwa ascended an eminence in the vicinity to watch the result; and to encourage his men by his presence. On both sides the loss was terrible, but the event of the battle left the British in possession of the place. A grant of L.500 per annum was conferred by the East India Company on Captain Staunton, in testimony of their admiration of the gallantry displayed by him upon the occasion. Lat. 18. 39. Long. 74. 8.
