RICHARD (1740-1821), an eminent painter of the last century, was born in Devonshire. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1771, and gained considerable reputation by his pictures of "Rinaldo and Armida," "Psyche," "Madonna and Child," and "St John;" but his forte lay in miniature painting, in which he was very successful. His wife Maria, who was born at Leghorn of English parents, also painted portraits and historical subjects with great ability, as may be seen from the prints after her by Bartolozzi and others. After her husband's death she retired to Lodi.
