a market-town of Dorsetshire, 12 miles S.S.W. of Salisbury, and 93 miles from London. Pop. of parish (1851) 2737, chiefly engaged in agriculture. The town is pleasantly situated, and the surrounding district is fertile. The parish church is a fine old structure, surmounted by an elegant tower. On Castle Hill, S. of the town, is a round double-ditched camp of six acres. Bishop Stillingfleet was a native of this place.
