a maritime village and burgh of barony in Scotland, stewartry of Kirkcudbright, beautifully situated at the mouth of the Cree, in Wigton Bay. It has some coasting trade, and in the neighbourhood is an extensive granite quarry employing upwards of 300 persons. Dr Thomas Brown was born here in 1780. Pop. (1851) 1303.
