a market-town in the hundred of the same name, county of Somerset, 10 miles S.S.W. of Ilchester, in a fertile valley watered by the rivers Axe and Parrett. It has a fine Gothic church surmounted by an embattled tower, and a free grammar-school, with four exhibitions at Oxford. Pop. (1851) 3303.
