a parliamentary borough of England, county of Wilts, consisting of the hundreds and divisions of Highworth, Cricklade, Staple, Kingsbridge, and Malmesbury (except such part of the hundred of Malmesbury as is included within the borough of Malmesbury). Pop. (1851) 35,503. Cricklade returns two members to parliament. Registered electors (1851-52) 1647. The old market-town of this name consists of the parishes of St Mary and St Sampson, having in 1851, 431 and 1475 inhabitants respectively. It is situated on the right bank of the Thames, 9 miles S.E. of Cirencester, and 84 miles from London. The church of St Sampson is a spacious cruciform edifice, with a lofty and highly ornamented tower. The market formerly held on Saturday is now discontinued.
