a seaport-town of Northern Germany, at the mouth of the Elbe, on its left bank, 58 miles W.N.W. of Hamburg, to which city it belongs. It has about 1000 inhabitants, chiefly pilots and fishermen, and the harbour is good and secure. In summer it is a resort of sea-bathers.
