(from κύκλος a circle, and ὤψ the eye), three famous Titans, distinguished by having one eye in the middle of their forehead. They were fabled to have been the sons of Uranus and Ge, and their names were Argos, Brontes, and Steropes. They are said to have been thrown into Tartarus by Saturn; but having been released by Jupiter they forged his thunderbolts, as well as the shield of Pluto and the trident of Neptune. In Homer the Cyclops appear as a band of gigantic Sicilian shepherds who indulged in cannibalism and other atrocities. A later tradition represents them as the assistants of Vulcan, and engaged in fabricating armour in their workshops under Mount Etna.
