St., a village of France, Seine-et-Oise, arrondissement of Versailles, and three miles W. of that town. It is celebrated for an institution founded here by Louis XIV., at the suggestion of Madame de Maintenon, for the education of 250 young ladies of noble birth. Racine's tragedies of "Esther" and "Athalie" were written for and first acted by the pupils of this establishment. It was converted by Napoleon in 1806 into a training school for infantry officers, and is still used for that purpose.
