DACTYLIOMANCY

Volume 7 · 90 words · 1860 Edition

(Dactylomantia, from δάκτυλος Dactylography (a ring, μοναξια, divination), a kind of divination by means of a ring. It was performed by holding a ring, suspended by a fine thread, over a round table, on the edge of which were made various marks with the twenty-four letters of the alphabet. The ring, in vibrating over the table, stopped over certain of the letters, which, being joined together, composed the answer required. The operation was preceded and accompanied by several ceremonies; which are detailed at large by Marcellinus in his 29th book.
