a town of Prussia, capital of a cognominal circle in the government of Stettin, situated on the Peene, which here receives the Trebel and the Tollense, 72 miles W.N.W. of Stettin. It has manufactures of woollen cloths, linens, hats, and hosiery; besides breweries, distilleries, tanneries, &c.; and an active trade in tobacco, gloves, corn, and timber. Pop. (1849), including military, 7609. Demmin is a town of considerable antiquity, having been a place of importance in the time of Charlemagne, and is noted for the number of sieges it has sustained. Its fortifications were destroyed in 1759. In 1807 several engagements took place here between the French and Russians.
