a town of European Turkey, on the Maritza, province of Roumelia and sanjakof Gallipoli, at the foot of a conical hill surmounted by a castle, 25 miles S. of Adrianople. Pop. about 10,000. The town is tolerably well-built, and has a mosque, several Greek churches, colleges, and public baths; and manufactures of silk and woollen stuffs and earthenware. Charles XII. of Sweden resided here for more than a year after the battle of Poltava.
