a small city of Northern Germany, capital of the principality of Lippe-Detmold, is situated on the Werre, 46 miles S.W. of Hanover. It is divided into an old and new town, the latter of which is well built, and contains the palace, a gymnasium, normal seminary, trades' school, hospital, orphan asylum, theatre, Bible society, and about 5000 inhabitants.
