now the *Licenza*, a small river of Italy, flowing into the Anio about nine miles from Tivoli. In a historical point of view, the Digentia is quite unimportant, but it is highly interesting as the stream on whose banks Horace's Sabine farm was situated. Numerous allusions to the Digentia and the surrounding scenery occur in the works of that poet. The whole topography of this interesting district will be found fully discussed in Champy's *Maison d'Horace*, and in Milman's *Life of Horace*.
