a fortified town of Bavaria, and the capital of a half-bailiwick in the circle of Middle Franconia, on the Wertitz, 20 miles S.W. of Anspach. It was formerly a free imperial city, and now contains about 5500 inhabitants, engaged chiefly in the manufacture of woollen cloths, hats, stockings, and leather.
