one who dissents or differs from another in opinion. In matters of religion, it denotes one who separates from, or does not unite with, any established church. In this sense all seceders are dissenters, though a distinction, rather verbal than real, is sometimes drawn between the two. The word dissident is sometimes used in a similar sense.
