a town of Holland, province of Friesland, 12 miles N.E. of Leeuwarden, and about a league from the North Sea, with which it communicates by means of the ship canal Dokkum-diep. It has salt-refineries, breweries, and building-docks; and some trade in cheese, butter, and cattle. Pop. 3800.
