nautical language, a rope or strap fastened round the mast of a ship to give support to the *padling* (a mass of yarn or oakum used to prevent chafing), where the lower yards rest on the slings. Dolphin is also applied to a spar or buoy furnished with a large ring, and anchored, to which a vessel may bend its cable.
