a town of Wiltshire, formerly a parliamentary borough, but disfranchised by the Reform act. It is situated on the Avon, which is here divided into three branches, each of which is crossed by a bridge, 6 miles S.S.E. of Salisbury. It consists chiefly of one long irregularly built street. The principal building is the parish church, a large cruciform edifice with a tower. The market formerly held here has long been discontinued. Pop. (1851) 2727.
