a favourite watering-place in Argyllshire, on the Firth of Clyde, 9 miles W. of Greenock. It has an excellent pier, and many well-built houses and elegant villas. Numerous steamers from Glasgow and other places touch there. The castle was once a royal residence and a strong fortress, of which no remains except a wall are now visible. Pop. (1851) 2229.
