in Suffolk; 26 miles N.E. of Ipswich, the Democ or Dumnoc of the Saxons, and the capital of East Anglia, was formerly an important seaport-town, and the seat of an extensive trade. Its harbour and the greater part of the town have been destroyed by encroachments of the sea, and it is now only a poor fishing village with 294 inhabitants.
