a market-town of England, in the county of Stafford, on the river Sow, 6½ miles W.N.W. of the town of Stafford. It is a neatly built place, and contains a castle, the residence of the bishop of Lichfield. In its church Bishop Halse concealed Queen Margaret when she fled from Mucklestone. Market-day Friday.
