(effigies), the portrait, image, or representation of a person. It also denotes the impression of a coin, representing the head of the prince who struck the coin. To hang, or burn in effigy, is to burn or hang an image or picture of the person intended to be executed or degraded. In France, this was formerly done in the case of any criminal who could not be apprehended—his image or picture being hung on a gibbet, below which was written his sentence of condemnation.
