a village of Surrey, 18 miles W. of London, on the Thames, and connected with Staines on the opposite side of the river by an iron bridge. In the vicinity is Runnymede, famous in English history as the scene of the conference between King John and his barons, which ended in the signing of the Magna Charta, A.D. 1215; and Cooper's Hill, celebrated by Denham and Pope.
