the ancient Illici, a town of Spain, province of Alicante, and 13 miles S.W. of the town of that name. Pop. 15,649. The town, which has a very oriental appearance, being built in the Moorish style, is surrounded by walls, and divided by a ravine over which there is a handsome bridge. The principal church is a fine edifice, surmounted by a majestic dome. There is a magnificent old castle belonging to the Duke of Arcos, on whose estate the town is built. Elche has manufactures of coarse linen and cotton goods. The town is surrounded on all sides by extensive plantations of date palms, the fruit of which constitutes its chief article of export, and is shipped from Alicante as Barbary dates. This is the birthplace of Don George Juan, the travelling companion of Ulloa in South America.
