(Lat. elixire, to boil, to seethe), in Medicine, a tincture composed of several ingredients. In modern pharmacy elixirs are called compound tinctures. Elixir was also the name given by the alchemists to a liquor for transmuting base metals into gold, as also to a cordial which was reputed to possess rejuvenescent qualities.
