a fortified town of Rhenish Prussia, government of Dusseldorf, situated on the right bank of the Rhine, 5 miles N.E. of Cleves. Pop. (1849) 6647. It has several churches, a gymnasium, Roman Catholic seminary; and manufactures of woollen and linen goods, leather, and soap. Emmerich was formerly a member of the Hanseatic League.
