(ἐπιρημα, experience), one whose knowledge is founded on experience. The name of Empirici was given to an ancient sect of Greek physicians who contended that experience alone was needful in the healing art. Philinus of Cos is the reputed author of this system, which was greatly extended and improved by Serapion of Alexandria. From the pretensions and ignorance exhibited by many of this sect, the term empiric has become a common designation for one who enters on practice without a regular professional education; and, in general, for a quack, or pretender to medical skill.
