a fortified town of Holland, province of North Holland, on the Zuider Zee, 28 miles N.N.E. of Amsterdam. The harbour, which was formerly very commodious, is now, from the accumulation of sand, all but useless. It has, however, extensive herring fisheries, and some trade in cheese, fish, salt, timber, &c. Pop. 6000.
