It was ordained by Solon that a revision of the laws at Athens should take place annually, for the purpose of amending or repealing such as might be found unsuitable to the existing state of affairs. This was called ἐπιχειροτονία τῶν νόμων, from the manner of giving suffrages on such occasions by holding up the hands. (See Potter's *Archæol. Græc.*, vol. i., p. 242.)
