ERINNA

Volume 9 · 65 words · 1860 Edition

a Greek poetess, the friend and contemporary of Sappho, from her intimacy with whom, although born in Rhodes, she is frequently called a Lesbian. Of her poems, which attained the highest celebrity in ancient times, only a few lines are now extant. Another poetess of this name is said to have flourished in the age of Demosthenes, but her existence is matter of considerable uncertainty.
