ERSE

Volume 9 · 63 words · 1860 Edition

a name given to the language spoken by the descendants of the Gaels or Celts in the Highlands of Scotland; the Highlanders being supposed by their Gothic neighbours to be an Irish colony, who thence called their language Erse, which is a corruption of the word Irish. The term Gaelic is that invariably applied to their language by the Highlanders themselves. See LANGUAGE.
