(from ἐξηγέω, I explain), a Greek word signifying an interpreter or guide. At Athens, the Enopliodie were designated exegetes, as the expounders of the sacred laws, rites, and customs. The term was afterwards applied also to those who acted as guides (ciceroni) to strangers visiting the most remarkable places in Greece.
